The cooperation between the Formula Student teams of Leibniz University Hannover and Peter the Great Polytechnic University St. Petersburg was established this year within the project “Strategic Partnership”.
Formula Student is a student engineering competition to design, build, test, and race a small-scale formula style car. It is also a platform to discuss ideas and solutions to various complex problems in this field and exchange experience.
After an initial successful trial during the event qualification, both teams "HorsePower Hannover" and "Polytech North Capital Motorsport" were able to prepare together, successfully qualify, and participate at the race events in Germany and the Netherlands.
The Russian student team visited Hannover in August, just a week before the start of the "Formula Student Germany (FSG)" event. The visit to St.Petersburg followed in September 2018. The students got a deep insight into the planning, structuring, working culture and technical framework for the realization of such a complex project at the partner university. In addition, the team from Hannover had the opportunity to visit the Solar Racing Team at the St.Petersburg Polytechnic University, which build an electric race car with a different requirement profile.
Even though both teams compete in different racing disciplines (Hannover with electric and St. Petersburg with combustion engine), the teamwork and the shared experience are crucial for the success of such a project. As a famous Formula One engineer and Formula Student judge Claude Rouelle said: "Build an A-Team first and a C-Car first and your Team evolve year after year and you will make a car which is better and better".
In this sense, all participating students would like to thank the DAAD and the International Office for this great opportunity and hope to continue to maintain and expand the partnership. The report about the stay in St.Petersburg can be viewed at web page of the International Office.
